Hand Turned Spalted Maple Oval Bowls

When maple trees are felled by storms or age they begin decaying, creating "spalting" or complex patterns of darkened lines and patterns within the grain. The maker collects these naturally beautiful pieces of wood where he lives in Western Massachusetts and turns them on a lathe of his own design, creating incredibly beautiful, functional bowls suitable for everyday use and centerpiece display.
No two bowls will ever be alike; the alchemy of nature's decay combined with the handwork of the maker creates one of a kind pieces, which nonetheless come in standardized sizes for nesting together as sets if desired.
Totally functional for use with food, each bowl is dehydrated down to 6% humidity to prevent warping, then sanded carefully to a super-smooth, silky finish, then carefully oiled and sealed with food safe oils for a lifetime of use. When using with food, simply hand wash and dry. A periodic treatment with mineral oil will help maintain the water resistant integrity of the bowl.
